Our day

We start in a relaxed atmosphere with tea, coffee and a short, theoretical introduction. After a brief refresher in regards to camera basics, we explore some technical aspects in theory. We then seamlessly move into a practical part with simple exercises with a model. We discover ways to communicate and make the subject feel at ease with the camera and ourselves. We learn about different ways of approaching portraits and learn how to actively compose our images.

In the second half of the course we head outside (weather permitting) where we apply and deepen what we have just learned to typical portrait-, family- and travel situations. The course is being completed with some practical tricks and hacks for even better portraits of family and friends

We then go back to the studio for a final image review.

Start: 11.00am, duration: 7hrs

Portrait photography 2

Studio Edition

This is for the true enthusiasts. If you own a proper camera and want to take your game a little further, then this is for you. Leaving the basics behind, we experiment with our own artistic approach. We discover creative composition and work professionally with studio light, light formers and our own vision.

  • Technical aspects and equipment use
  • Posing and active subject placement
  • Communication and model instructing
  • Artistic control
  • Classic subject placement vs creative composition
  • Working with light and light formers
  • Formulating a visual language
  • Image review

Our day

We meet and greet at the studio for coffee, tea and an introduction to some technical aspects, specific to studio portrait photography. The theory part deals with light, its properties, portrait-specific approaches and setting up a professional studio environment. We proceed with motive planning and how to envision and creatively control the outcome.

Our practical part kicks off  by model instruction, communication, while touching on the social aspects of people and portrait photography. We proceed applying what we've just internalised to our studio situation and get to work. Hard light vs soft light, reflective vs. dispersive, …we discover different light sources and light formers and pay particular attention to embedding or own creative vision into the photographic workflow.

We then discuss our results and round them off with personal consultations in regards to individual tastes and requirements.

What to expect
Fun

Learning is fun! Especially within a community of creative minds. So let's make this a fun day and an extraordinary one, too! As much as this is a course, we regard it as an event that you will keep in your memory.

individualism

We learn as a group but we tend to each individual in a one-on-one fashion. This is why our courses are restricted to 7 people max. So we can make sure that we learn from each others challenges as much as from our own.

relevance

Our teaching is practical, hands-on and delivered in comprehensible packages that built upon one another. Every attendant walks home with a PDF summary booklet as a refresher and to keep the course content fresh and accessible in future.
